Chapter Seventeen

Waiting to hear from Marty made the day drag. Emma was worried about him, and after a few hours, she finally got a message: “False alarm, no brother. He wasn’t violent, either. I’ll explain later.”

She frowned. It didn’t sound good, but at least he hadn’t been hurt. She let out a sigh of relief and put her phone away.

Addie noticed this dramatic display and leaned in. “Is everything okay?”

Emma nodded. “Everything’s fine. Why?”

“Trouble in paradise with you and Marty?”

“We’re just friends,” Emma said with a laugh. “So no.”

The phone rang and Addie jumped to grab it. Emma stood next to her, feeling slightly jittery. She wasn’t sure what it was. Addie’s teasing didn’t bother her. That was nothing.

It was more how worried she’d been about Marty. At first, she had been worried whoever sent that email might hurt him. Now, she was worried that person did hurt him, just not physically.

When Addie got off the phone, she turned to Emma with a grin. “Hang on. I brought something for you.”

Emma waited until she returned from the break room with a folded newspaper. “Look at this. The front page story.”

Emma unfolded the paper to find a picture of Marty in black and white. Her heart fluttered. Next to him was Blaise, both of them posed under the snappy headline “SureFired’s CEO is Sure of One Thing: Success.”

She skimmed the article quickly. It was mainly an interview where Blaise talked about his excitement for the SureFired technology. He also gushed about his staff.

That was where Marty came in. According to Blaise, Marty was “a beacon of integrity, refusing to back down even with the FBI on his tail.”

“Oh my,” Emma said quietly.

“I figured you’d want to have a copy.” Addie giggled. “Marty’s turning into quite a celebrity.”

“Looks like it,” Emma said, staring at his picture. He looked so cool. “Are you sure I can keep this?”

Addie nodded. “Definitely. It’s kinda old, actually. My Gran saved it for me because it mentions the hotel. I thought you’d get a kick out of it.”

Emma smiled. “Thanks.” It would be fun to show Marty later. It might even cheer him up.

Addie finished her shift and left for the day, and Emma was left to fend for herself for a few hours until Gigi arrived. It was busy, but manageable, and the time flew by.

Gigi arrived in sour spirits, as usual, but Emma didn’t mind. She was relieved to have a break for the evening; she’d worked double shifts the last three days at the daycare because one of her coworkers had been sick. All she wanted to do was eat a microwaved baked potato and go to sleep.

She was about to leave when Dan, one of the servers from The Plum Spoon, stopped by.

“Do you have plans tonight?” he asked.

Emma shrugged. “Just going home. I’m pretty tired. Why?”

“The chef wants to try out a new special. I thought you might like a free dinner.”

“Oh.” She wasn’t one to turn down a delicious meal, but she felt so tired.
